Sunset Strip...

Nancy Deedrick's interview about Jim Morrison and the Hollywood Hangover is brilliant... Just heard it again here on the commercial free Pluto Radio stream.  It was a pleasure to interview her, she was/is frank, to the point, and colorful in a way that you just have to listen to her.  Thanks again for the interview Nancy!

THE LOW LOWS - Lyrical Oddities /Terrifying Pulses / Dark Corners

Founded 2006 in Athens Georgia, the Low Lows were named after the final release of NYC noise-pop trio Parker & Lily.  In the Summer of 2008 the Low Lows relocated from Georgia to Austin Texas, simultaneously flowering quite suddenly into a sprawling ten-player onstage spectacle. Still centered around the plaintive voice & songs of Mangham Parker, now vibraphone, steel guitar and a slew of vintage organs and pianos round out a dense, funereal live sound evocative of Band of Horses & early My Morning Jacket. Their intricately orchestrated four-man brass section evokes both stax/volt- style balladry and Neutral Milk cacophony. Stately, dreamlike waltzes build to explosive, gospel-tinged climaxes, & a woozy country narcosis kin to Skygreen Leopards or Phosphorescent alternates with Velvets- style feedback drones & buried noise melodies. (as compiled on the bands website)

THE COSMONAUTS - Alternative / Rock

Dynamic four piece from Edinburgh infused with 60s rock, dark sounds and brooding electric cello.  The Cosmonauts were formed in 2008 by guitarist/vocalist Chris Bryce and bassist/vocalist Alan Robertson, the latest phase in a long-term collaboration of almost 10 years. With the aim of creating a more distinctive sound, cellist/vocalist Claire Schiavone was brought on board, adding a notably dark edge to the sound. After experimenting with several dummers, Paul Stuart joined the group in 2009. With their line-up settled, The Cosmonauts set to work fusing their sound together and bringing their individual influences and shared vision to the mix. After recording a few demos the band decided to try them out at live gigs in Edinburgh, eliciting a extremely positive response from audiences. With this new found confidence the band then pushed themselves further, securing regular gigs outside Edinburgh, plus radio play in the USA and on Scottish independent radio stations.

Riding this wave of enthusiasm, The Cosmonauts are currently working on their self produced debut album, due for release in early 2012.  In the meantime, the band have released a 3-track EP showcasing the diverse styles and real musical depth of their sound. This is to give existing fans and new listeners a taste of what is to come on the album. Once the album is released, The Cosmonauts will be promoting it throughout the UK with live gigs and more local/international radio play. (as compiled on the bands website)

CONFUSION IS NEXT - The Generation Of This Order

CIN begun in Feb. 2004 as two bored teenage guitarists, Teo & Lorenzo, in a grey high school of a city in the north of Italy, Monza, a city of F1 races and a king assasination, a few kms away from Milan. They decided to bang some noise together, form a grunge band, writing original songs and naming themselves after one of the most disturbing songs of early Sonic Youth. Mixing several influences and tastes, the band took final shape with Fabrizio (aka Bicio) and Giuseppe (aka Pinno), drum and bass, in october 2004. With a live debut in december 2004, CIN were ready. HUDSON K - Psychedelic Experimentalism

Hudson K is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Christina Horn. Combining influences that span decades, Christina’s work dwells in the abstract, emerging in timeless forms.

The New York-born Horn pulls from her music school education and her experience producing scores when it comes to writing songs. She also cites Bat for Lashes and Andrew Bird as influences, while echoes of Bjork and PJ Harvey are heard throughout Hudson K’s transforming indie rock sound. (as compiled on the bands website)

The Other Side .

The Other Side are all from central Fife, Scotland, who put the band together in February 2009. Within 3 months they had written and recorded 8 songs, launched themselves on Myspace and did their first gig in Edinburgh.
Since then they have continued to write and record new songs, 17 in total so far. Their Album, Catch The Sun, is available at
 www.reverbnation.com/theotherside
They have gigged every month, 63 gigs so far and counting. All recordings are produced by Kirby in their rehearsal rooms on an 8 Track. Their influences are as wide ranging as their own music. They have no fixed agenda or style to constrain the writing process. If it sounds good, no matter what, they will go with it. To really find out what they are all about you really need to catch one of their explosive live sets. Where they can go from Bluesy/Rock, through Punk and back to mellow in the space of a few songs.
For 2011, more of the same. They are hoping to gig further afield, north or south, so any promoters or venues looking for a band that always turn up on time, give you or the sound engineer no grief and deliver a great set, get in touch.

Nothingdoers...

The Nothingdoers play contemporary folk-rock oriented music with English lyrics. Because of the appalling situation with independent music recordings in Russia, The Nothingdoers cling to the principles of DIY in their recordings and in the process of album promotion, so they still remain unsigned and plan to continue releasing their future recordings under the Creative Commons license. Starting their collaboration as a two-guitar act, the guys recorded their first two albums, “The Unplugged Room Of Killed Time” (2004) and “Tonight” (2005) using cheap mics and home PCs.

After 2005, Igor and George played together in some indie-rock and punk bands, improving their skills as stage performers and then got back to their home studios to record their third full-length album, “Twenty Past Sixteen” (2008), which is now available for free download on the Web. In Fall 2009 The Nothingdoers again began making live appearances in Moscow and St. Petersburg venues, performing songs from “Twenty Past Sixteen” and some new stuff from the upcoming record, which is going to feature over 10 tracks in various genres. The Nothingdoers’ musical influences include such artists as Beck, Micah P. Hinson, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Sonic Youth, Kings Of Convenience etc.

Igor Evanowe - vocals, guitars, keys, programming
George Manaev - bass, guitars, lyrics, vocals
Inat Olenev - drums & percussion

Rand Reynolds

Rand Reynolds: Brief Bio

Rand Reynolds writes authentic Hillbilly Noir, a new music genre he created in 2005 to describe his haunting Edgar Allen Poe-like lyrics accompanied by a stark, rustic Martin guitar. Like its film noir counterpart, Reynolds’ musical vignettes focus on desolate characters that, on the surface, appear to exist only in terms of black and white, good and bad or love and lust. But Reynolds’ characters struggle inwardly to co-exist in the gray moral shadows of their own footsteps … the kind of boot steps that echo in a vacant alley on a black, rainy night while moving headstrong, wantonly, into life’s underbelly. He delivers his songs in a deep baritone voice that spearheads his unique signature sound that is dark, threatening and dangerous. Reynolds’ material -- which ranges from songs about alcoholics, drifters, serial killers, strippers, dope fiends, wife beaters, washed-up country singers, finger pointers and, generic sinners and saints -- explores a new modern sensuality and savvy. The songs reek of the human abyss, danger and disappointment because, in his world, hope and desperation go hand in hand. For his dreams of easy deliverance are empty, two sided and vague. Reynolds has fine tuned his Hillbilly Noir to make it stylized, individualistic and intimate, and the genre embraces this guitar player’s journey of candid self-discovery that is bold and rare among songwriters of today.  (as compiled on Mr. Reynolds' webpage).

"We came across some of Mr. Reynolds' music on the internet archive - we hope to get our hands on yet more of this brilliant songsmith's material."  - Lee Crisman

Bernie on the commerical free Pluto Radio stream. . .

I play while sitting prone under a tree in a field on a plain. Why? I'll tell you why. I like to make music. I like to listen to music, but that mostly makes me feel like making music. So I started making music, lots of music.

I like the act of writing, playing and recording. The entire life-cycle of music. I've put together a fantastic web-site and have put together a fantastic album for sale, details on my fantastic web-site. I will continue to make music, to write music and to record music. Because that's what I love to do. Thanks! (all as compiled from Bernie Durfee's website http://cobzilla.com/)

Black Wyrm Seed...

Metal ~ Jazz ~ Psychadelic

Sickened by the sad state of modern mainstream music, the gents from Black Wyrm Seed bartered for a kilo of “magic beans” in a backalley deal somewhere on the South Side of Chicago, and shortly thereafter found themselves in an utterly foreign — and yet strangely inviting — domain. There are some who might refer to the place as “parts unknown”; others might call it “the great beyond”; and its exact coordinates remain unclear. But this much is certain: it lies somewhere between 1966 and the mountains of the moon…and to Black Wyrm Seed, it is now home (as compiled from the bands website).

Ross Meyerson from Loud Loop Press in Chicago writes:
"Black Wyrm Seed’s debut isn’t something you’d put on when you need to get shit done. It’s stoner music for stoners and ex-stoners who like to remember the good old days when getting shit done had no meaning in one’s life. And it’s the perfect soundtrack for that. Black Wyrm Seed are more than comfortable going at their own, sloth-like pace. The fact that it doesn’t get old or drag is a testament to the fact that they write songs – slow as molasses songs – but songs none the less. If that’s your bag, I heavily suggest digging out your old tape deck and finding a bag of Doritos. You’ll thank me."

"Between crunchy guitar riffs, soaring solos, and infectious vocal melodies, Leverage is a high-energy and thoroughly enjoyable record."  Jessie Rodgers, Radio Free Charlotte

"'Hang it High' features two of my favorite things in metal music: chunky guitar and pinched harmonics. I found myself singing along to each song after only hearing the chorus a few times. You can’t help but bob your head and tap your foot to the beat."  Sue Hardee, RaleighMusic.com

"'The Chosen Few' is full of great hooks that stick in your head - it’s infectious, it’s viral, and if any song had a chance of being number 1 on a chart, it’s Modena’s 'The Chosen Few'!"  GulfCoastMusic.com review

Wily Bo Walker, a unique favorite on the Pluto Radio stream ..

Thursday, February 12, 2015

Kelley Vice brings together diverse elements of acoustic rock, jazz, and innovative technique in an unconventional style rich with modal tunings, vibrant melodies and passionate vocals. Influenced heavily by James Taylor, the late Michael Hedges, Chris Cornell and Dave Matthews, Kelley's songwriting is evocative and painfully honest, conveying a depth of emotion that keeps listeners coming back for more.

Kelley's music encompasses a wide spectrum of style and emotion, ranging from the explosive "Give In" to the haunting statement of "I Can Still Fall". His instrumentals move easily from dark sensuality to playful innocence. Though all are executed with the same unique character developed over two and a half decades of performance, no two songs are alike. (as compiled on this artists web site)

the Rowdymen...

On a whiskey fueled summers night in the heart of the Canadian Prairies, the worlds meanest Rockabilly band was born. For the past decade The Rowdymen have delivered their patented blend of High-Octane Edgy Rockabilly and Hard Drivin' Prairie Twang to audiences across the nation. This full throttle collective has shared bills with an eclectic mix of luminaries including Bill Haley's original Comets, Reverend Horton Heat, Hank III, Neko Case blues legend T-Model Ford, and Sleepy La Beef. Approaching show 1000, the band is back with a vengeance with the release of Gas, Liquor and Fireworks, the bands fourth full length release. With this record on Transistor 66, the Rowdymen show why they're one of the fiercest Rockabilly bands on the planet. From beer soaked rockers to murder death ballads, this record will kick your *** right on to the dance floor (as compiled from the band’s website).

We love ‘Johnny Rumble’…it’s all about the foot stompin’ here in the cave. The Rowdymen deserve to be heard!

the Flying Eyes..

The Flying Eyes are a heavy, psychedelic blues band hailing from Baltimore, Maryland. They took their name from a 1962 science fiction novel about giant, disembodied eyes that descend from outer space to control humanity.

In 2007, three long time friends (Adam, Mac and Elias) adopted Will as their lead singer, thus solidifying the lineup that would carry them forward. In the winter of 2008, they released the “Bad Blood EP” at a sold out show at The Talking Head Club in downtown Baltimore. That summer, they toured for the first time to Texas and back supporting this independent release.

In the summer of 2009 The Flying Eyes embarked on a thirty-three day tour across the entire country playing at venues in New York, Nashville, Los Angeles and Chicago.  (as compiled on the bands website)

Pikara ..

If you haven't yet heard Pikara, there's never been a better time to discover the music of Sara Johanne, particularly if, like me, you're gazing out of the window at snow. Intricate and complex, Pikara is a collection of piano based pieces, complemented by soaring strings and Sara's versatile vocals, it's the sound of winter at it's most beautiful. High res photos are available and interviews are invited. Andrea x Pikara This Hollow 24 March 2015 Pikara is the solo project from Sara Johanne who grew up on Rindö, Sweden, an island outside Stockholm where she studied violin at Malungs Folkhogskola. Though Sara Johanne currently resides in the sinuous hills of the Columbia Gorge in Washington state, a Swedish folk music influence can clearly be heard on her new album 'This Hollow'. Johanne embarked on her solo career after living in the Pacific Northwest and working as a pianist and bassist with bands Susurrus Station and Zouaves. 'This Hollow' is the third Pikara album and makes a departure from the sound of previous releases, which have ranged from slow, dark, meandering pop to sparse tripped out instrumental compositions. 'This Hollow' centres around piano based pieces, complemented by soaring string arrangements. The album was recorded and produced by Jason Breeden; he is also responsible for the beautiful photography that accompanies the release.
