It's
been a busy year for The Saturday Giant, aka Columbus, Ohio resident
Philip Cogley. He wrote, recorded and mixed his debut, You've Heard of Dragons;
polished up solo arrangements of the songs; played a bunch of shows in
Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and a litany of stops in between;
released a benefit double single called Freedom of Choice;
performed at a TEDx conference in Columbus and this year's SXSW Festival
in Austin; and began writing and recording a follow-up EP.
Though
he embraces a do-it-yourself ethos, Cogley's solo performances are
surprisingly complete: he performs as a one-man band, employing looping
technology to build lush arrangements comprised of beatboxing, guitar
soundscapes, keyboards and vocals. Though this approach tends to
captivate audiences, it's Cogley's instinct towards restraint that makes
a Saturday Giant show truly memorable--songs are constructed and
disassembled with economy, without resort to virtuosic displays that
lead many looping artists into more tedious territory (as compiled on
the bands website)
