Welcome to the Speakeasy

(as compiled on Pilgrim Speakeasy's collective websites)"...Now rather exitingly the musical maveric is back. Empowered by t'internet a new generation of musicians can be as experimental as they like without having to worry about how it sounds to an A&R man. Pluto Radio - playing the music that deserves to be heard!  Goin' social!  -  My best from the great American desert.  Lee-

Saturday, January 29, 2011

Quote from BUZZ MAGAZINE "Lee Negin is a spiritual person. He left Amercia over 20 years ago.  Climbing mountains and living in places like Japan and Poland, Lee is now a professor in Seoul Korea. He is also in the tops of music charts around the world for his digital orchestrations. Lee sees something we don’t. A music label asked to re-release some of Lee’s music from when he first made a mark on the electronic music scene, and now...in a time where mental health is on everyone’s minds, the legacy of Lee’s thought-provoking sounds and the provacative artwork of Red Hawk SODA serve as high-art templates for concentration and focus. Created to evoke concentration. His new record HUNGRY GHOSTS is coming out this Febuary. Considered ultra-art, or future art, the digital journeys of Lee’s music have been recognized the world over. He is listed in The International Discography of the New Wave."

Apparently we are being hacked for the second day in a row by what our server company refers to as "big DOS attack at the network."

Per Wikipedia -  "A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or people to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers. The term is generally used with regards to computer networks, but is not limited to this field, for example, it is also used in reference to CPU resource management."

ALL I KNOW IS IT MAKES CONSISTENCY DIFFICULT for our stream.  My apologies to our devoted listeners.  We will be back up as soon as these covert bastards have their way with us.  Our FLASH AUDIO PLAYER is still up and running.

MARINA KESLER - Return

Singing has always been my passion. I have now been inspired to create my own songs, writing music to the poetry of my Russian compatriots here in the United States. I was born in the Black Sea port of Odessa in the Ukraine. Odessa is a city of many musical traditions and a conglomeration of cultures. I cannot help but feel the tug of these traditions whenever I sing. Now my home is in Los Angeles, California. Just like Odessa, it’s a multicultural city, and my creativity is infused by its varied musical influences.

RETURN is my second CD, and what makes it so special is that it marks my progression as a performer and as a human being. My heart has grown and matured, enriched by extraordinary life experiences and people. Now I am singing opera, along with standards from the American stage as well as the songs I have written. Whatever the musical style, I am an instrument to express the melodic and poetic context of a song or an aria, and to convey its rich emotions.

The songs I share with you come from the deepest place in my heart. And if I have succeeded in bringing out their true beauty and meaning, then I am happy (as compiled from Ms. Kesler‘s website).

CAT MCLEAN - Beat Magazine

Beat Magazine Interviews Cat McLean!

Beat* How did you get into the music scene?
I started touring at a very young age. When I was 14 when I would dress up in my mom’s clothes and try to make myself look 21 to go out and play at the local bar in Oregon where my guitar teacher would play, and I would sit in. When I came here to the Bay Area, I worked at a studio that everyone recorded at, including Prince. I auditioned to get free time so I could get a deal. I recorded 2 albums of very original music. Too original for anyone to pick up at the time :-) I've spent my life in the studio, and met many great musicians that way.

Beat* Does your Audience inspire you and do you like to interact with them?
Oh yeah baby! They can be so awesome, you don't ever want to stop. I did a gig at a bar playing solo, and people kept coming in. I didn't want to stop. I played 4 hours straight, and they still wanted more, so I kept going. I love that!

Beat* Do you have a record label?
I have had development deals that never followed through with me. They always wanted me to be in all-girl groups dancing and singing, with no writing. It made me sick to think about doing it. So I started my own label with my business partner and bandmate called “Catapult” which turned into "Catastrophe Music" . I release all of my own music now.

Beat* Any last words?
I want to thank everyone for listening. I always love to hear from fans, and I answer all my messages even if it takes a while to get to them. So please, come join my public page @ Facebook or any other one of my sites. I would love to hear from you!

Thank you so much Richard for this interview. I hope 2011 is going to be a great year for the new "Beat Magazine" and for everyone out there:-) I will be releasing my new CD, hitting it hard with my new band, and new songs. I am so excited about all the new music that I’m working on, and I hope everyone will be too:-) Love you:-) xoxoxo

Band Members:
Laila Marie Costa Ramone - guitar, vocals and keyboards
Ben Butler - guitar

THE NICHOLS FAMILY GOSPEL HOUR ~ The Year of the Funeral

The Nichols Family Gospel Hour are a band that belongs in no certain genre of music. With styles of Acoustic, Metal, Blues, Rock & Classical mixed with a depressing, bleak atmosphere. The band purposely strayed away from things that would label them a certain category/genre of music.

“We wanted to do something that we’d never heard before. We are fans of so many styles of music and bands from really mellow and beautiful to really heavy and beautiful…I love melodic instrumental acoustic stuff with violins and cellos and wanted to do something to incorporate those instruments with ideas I’ve had. As a musician, Stevie Ray, Iommi and Dime are idols…But bands like Pink Floyd, Opeth, Antimatter or Anathema are what really moves my soul so I guess that’s a part of my inspiration too.” says Darren Nichols, the guitarist/songwriter of the band. TNFGH consists of 2 brothers, David & Darren Nichols - a band of no genre. The soundtrack to a movie that was never made (as compiled from the bands website).

PETE MAC - Simply True!

'In Limbo' is a collection of songs that date back as far as 2003, 14 songs written at different times, in different places over the space of 5 years. All music and lyrics are composed by Pete Mac. All instruments (Vocals, Guitars, Bass,Tambourine) are performed by Pete and he's also responsible for the production of the album.

'In Limbo' is an album of many moods, emotions, each song bringing across a different vibe. From the political outbursts of 'Corporate Pollution' to the atmospheric ambience of 'In Limbo', followed by the melodic waves of 'No Words' to the dischordent chops of 'Bury the World', 'In Limbo' takes a different musical direction from any previous Paradox sound. The album has recieved many positive reviews. The Grunge fanzine Minerva Corner in Portugal summed up the album as follows - "In Limbo" is a simple/ acoustic and direct album with some twists of electric guitar, nothing more added. Its natural and emotional as an intimite album should be... Nothing artificial, no masks, simply true (as compiled from the bands website).

DIRGE - A Collision of Sensations

Since its creation in 1994, the entity known as Dirge never stopped mutating and
evolving. From the industrial coldness of its early years to the abrasive heat of
its last works, the music of the band gradually changed into a stunning living
organism, stretching its compositions to reach abysmal depths and hypnochaotic
structures.

Massive guitars, monolithic pulses, ethereal progressions, and industrial hums build up the sonic architecture of a perpetually moving, volcano-like universe: it is a collision of sensations caught between stellar void and earth tremors (as compiled from the bands website).

GRANT MOFF TARKIN - 'Stormy Weather Blues' To Be Released in February!

Hello everybody,

Our best wishes for this new year!

The song will appear on our new album 'Stormy Weather Blues'. This was recorded and mixed last year by Dirk Miers at De Studio in Asse, and was recently mastered by Darius Helfteren in Amsterdam. A CD presentation is scheduled for the 2nd weekend of February in Leuven. Our website will soon be updated, but in the meanwhile you can get a first impression of the CD on www.myspace.com/granymofftarkin

Cotton Clown YouTube Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ADN87sa9M8

Lots of greetings,
Grant Moff Tarkin

2011 brought us first of all a music video. In two days we recorded this summer with Lennert Mottar (Soft Revolution) a video for our song 'Cotton Clown'. The result is shown YouTube (click link below).  The clown is convincingly impersonated by Jean, and the other 'actors' are probably no that hard to recognize....

TRUCKFIGHTERS - Beyond Ordinary

Three down-to-earth guys live their lives in Örebro, Sweden, work on day-to-day jobs, record songs and reach out for alternatives besides the ordinary, -playing clubs, cards, heavy tunes and fighting everyday problems as a touring band to leave common base for a while.

'TRUCKFIGHTERS', a fresh fuzzomentary by Joerg Steineck and Christian Maciejewski, provides uncommon insight into the double-tracked lifestyle of a young determined and in a way untypical rock band..
Sometimes funny, sometimes serious, sometimes tragic - always beyond ordinary (as compiled from the bands website).

KELLY VICE - Dark Sensuality to Playful Innocence.

He has been singing and playing musical instruments for over 25 years, including guitar, drums, bass, piano, pots and pans, armpit, and kazoo. He used to play several reed instruments, but he kept getting splinters in his tongue, so he gave them up.

Kelley began performing live as a dorky 12-year old kid, when Matthew and The Mandarins, a popular SE Asia country group, invited him to be a guest performer at a live show in Singapore, playing drums with the band at the Shangri-La Hotel. From 1984 to 1990, he was the guitarist for Seattle power trio Alliance, who performed extensively in the Puget Sound area. When Kelley was in his late teens and early twenties, he was a fixture on the streets of Seattle, playing guitar regularly at Pike Place Market and on University Way, and also worked as a recording engineer and live soundman for regional acts such as Edison Jones, Tantrum, NVU, Rail and many others.

Kelley Vice combines diverse elements of acoustic rock, jazz, and innovative technique in an unconventional style rich with modal tunings, vibrant melodies and passionate vocals. Influenced heavily by James Taylor, the late Michael Hedges, Chris Cornell and Critters Buggin, Kelley's songwriting is evocative and painfully honest, conveying an intensity of emotion that keeps listeners coming back for more (all as compiled from the bands website).

THE JUNK BAND - Jazz-Funk Surf-a-Billy

If you are expecting to hear your run of the mill cover band, with tonalities of most popular music, think again! JUNK has emerged as one of Phoenix’s hottest Junk-Funk bands, heating up the underground of the Arizona hot desert. After sifting through debris and rubbish, JUNK has emerged as a group with tight musicianship, which equals a musical complexity that is second to none.

These guys aren’t going anywhere, and their style is so different it is sure to make an impression on everyone who enjoys the music scene. You can catch their next performance on Current Events page (all as compiled from the bands websote).

ADRIAN AND THE SICKNESS - Bombastic Rock & Roll!

Adrian and the Sickness is an undeniable front of infectious pop concoction wrapped around electric, bombastic rock and roll. They have been wowing live audiences with sweet melody and sheer sonic power since their debut in February 2004. Guitarist Adrian Conner also plays lead in Hell’s Belles, an AC/DC tribute band so fearsome that Angus Young himself is a devoted fan. She’s a deft soloist and a sure hand with a stinging riff, and she’s demonstrated her talents in front of demanding AC/DC fans all over the world. But she’s also a formidable pop-rock songwriter, penning honest, forthright songs spiked with catchy, irresistible hooks. Her original music has been called “exciting, rambunctious and kinda scary” in Guitar Player Magazine (2007).

In 2008, Adrian’s endearing melodies as well as her scalding six-string caught the attention of fellow Austin resident, songwriter and bassist for the Gogo’s, Kathy Valentine, who produced the band’s fourth CD, B.F.D. (2009). Kathy’s attention to sonic detail and eye for the architecture of pop composition resulted in an album that combines the rock fury and dazzling guitar of Angus’ best, with the approachability and energy of early Go-Go’s-style pop-punk. Adrian and the Sickness released B.F.D., under their own label, Fantom Records, which charted on CMJ stations across the US and Canada, in early 2010.

Recently, the band has begun pre-production on their fifth album and Kathy Valentine is on tap to produce once again. Commanding, untamed, and with a kinetic live show to level all comers, Austin’s Adrian & The Sickness are just what the Dr. ordered (as compiled from their website).

SCAPEGOAT - Relentless!

Incorporating melody, brutality, and beauty to respire a stagnant music industry are Scapegoat: the five-piece hard rock band hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina. Established in 1999, Scapegoat has proven adamant with their driven work ethic to create inventive and passionate compositions. The band, comprised of Justin Driscoll (guitar), Daniel Hitselberger (drums), Dan Royer (bass), Kit Walters (vocals), and Spencer Bensch (guitar), are relentless in their pursuits to satisfy onlookers and capture new audiences. This band does everything a rock group should, without adhersing to the boring steadfast rules that produce generic, uninspiring acts (as compiled from the bands website).

CHACHI ON ACID - Members: Nib, Hairy and Nipples

The year was 1904, and Nibulous Arcola, during his mourning Stegasaurus shower had an epiphany. Why not sing? And that's exactly what he started doin', singing. It wasn't for another 25 years before he would happen across a gent with simalar ideals, Nippleodeon, of no fixed address. The two would sing, and sing in that quiet little bathhouse until the were exhausted. It wouldn't be for quite some time later, in 1958, on a sebatical in Africa that they would stumble across a tribe of Zulus, that they would discover the Zulu, El Hairiachi. Who would cauterize the union of what we now today as C.O.A.

“….and so it goes…..don’t know about you but we find it damned hard to resist a band whose members go by the names of Nib, Hairy and Nipples, of course we suspect that they aren’t the names on their passports if indeed they possess passports because having heard these snot nosed cuties we wouldn‘t be too surprised tp hear that this lot are under some kind of state controlled curfew. They hail from Ontario and by all accounts have been around now for the best part of two decades no doubt scaring the BEJEZUS out of record punters with their riotous revelry….trashy, sometimes stupid, never dull stuff like ‘Everybody I know is an Asshole‘ and ‘I Wanna be an Alcoholic‘ are instant spew venting pogo pounding shit-faced anthems while ‘Resurrection Cemetery‘ breaks from the well oiled formula and veers towards a seriously freaked series of chord serrating metal that‘d make Ozzy cack his pants….just wait until you hear the beer swilled and hiccupping chorus harmonies - sounds to us like Tarzan choking on a t-bone…..priceless. “ Mark Tales losing today.com (all as compiled form the bands website)

FAT TREE - Shake Your Hips and Close Your Eyes!

Every once in a while, a band comes along that restores your faith in the future of popular music. That band needs to get you to bob your head, shake your hips, and close your eyes and take you to that escape from the stresses of your day. Fat Tree is such a band. Originally formed in their home town of Alamogordo, New Mexico, Fat Tree combines rock, funk, jazz, and soul to create a completely original sound. Their pop savvy songs are laden with a heart and talent deeper than the fabricated sounds that are making people wish for a revolution.

While still giving the audience a catchy tune to sing along to, Fat Tree forces an audience to recognize the energy and power that music is supposed to have. Their inherent chemistry on stage is borne from their upbringing. Kyle, Eric, and Samuel Jacobs are brothers and Sam Bischof is in that same standing as he has known them for well over a decade. Their virtuosity on their instruments is evident as soon as you hear them play. With this band’s new sound and style combined with the familiar feel of the music America has created and loved, any audience will quickly be able to feel that something special is taking place. The journey of Fat Tree is just beginning, don’t be on the outside looking in (as compiled from the bands website).

In this time the band did many live shows, amongst them openers for Maria Mc Kee, Luna & Clem Snide. A follow-up single named "My Star" (produced by Carl Granberg) was released a short time after. The band’s second full-length album, "For tomorrow" sparkles from the speakers in one nice flow and one catchy tune follows the next like beaded (pop) pearls on string. Songs like "The Commonfield" or "Pasadena" combine the best of ARCADE FIRE, SUNWHEEL and THE CURE. The rest of the album reveals influences from bands such as STARS, BELLE & SEBASTIAN, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, NEW ORDER or PULP. The first single "A higher loss", already raised the bar in June. The full time album however, produced by Moonbabies multi instrumentalist Ola Frick, easily jumps that bar with audible confidence.

The music business is sometimes quite confusing - confusing for all those ambitious musicians, who struggle for support, but even more confusing for the numerous trend detectors, who are sent bustling through the clubs by the major labels. But sometimes everything is nice and simple like the pop literature of the day after tomorrow: an innovative internet label meets Sweden's best sound export since 'SHOUT OUT LOUDS' in the world wide web. Country boundaries are meaningless in the 21st century and the world will listen to new songs, which it shouldn't have missed from the beginning (as compiled from the bands website).

MAJOR MAJOR - Tearing up the Stage!

Bands are very much tied down to sounding like the last thing at the moment. When you get down to it, Major Major are music lovers and have no shame or need to leave out any of our influences. We like Hip Hop, we like rock, Conor even likes musicals! We go with what feels right and sounds great in our music; big harmonies, catchy melodies, a driving rhythm section and lyrics that have meaning and great subject matter, culminating in our unique brand of Extrovert Pop. Yes it’s pop, not such a dirty word to us, and when we play we like to show how much fun we are having instead of being dormant behind our instruments.

Conor Clarke, Neil Owen, Louis Cooper and James Knight are an all singing, all chanting musical explosion with a show as lively and exciting as the rock shows of the 60’s and 70’s without the unnecessarily long twiddly nonsense!

With a stunning concoction of influences from all corners of music, Major Major will have you captivated with their original pop sound! Comparisons have been made to Talking Heads, Dr Feelgood, Franz Ferdinand and Ozomatli. Major Major make an impact anywhere they play so watch as one of the country’s most exciting young bands tear up the stage in front of you…then offer to pay for any damages (as stated in the bands website).

THE GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE - psych-roots-sex-noise

Bela Lugosi and Elvis Presley both died on Stoo Odom's birthday. The GRAVES BROTHERS DELUXE, disembodied musical spirits from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, thus chose Odom eagerly when looking for host bodies to express themselves. A New Orleans native/ recovering archaeologist/ Pirate Cat Radio personality, Odom shares the current possessée duties with San Franciscans Willy the Mailman, Marco Villalobos, and Allison Lovejoy. Host bodies of GBDLX have put in time with THIN WHITE ROPE, SUBARACHNOID SPACE, THE RESIDENTS, GRANDADDY, and the late NOEL REDDING (yeah, him).

Since their formation in 1998, GBDLX have released a smoldering heap of albums, singles, and EPs, leading them to tours of Japan, Spain, Mexico, and the USA, plus international radio & TV appearances. Most recently, the Brothers were seen performing on ANTHONY BOURDAIN'S NO RESERVATIONS on the Travel Channel.

Their newest release, SAN MALO, is a post-Hurricane Katrina re-telling of the true story of St Malo, Louisiana, a swamp village founded in 1763 by Filipino deserters of Spanish galleons. The village's struggles, isolation, and 1915 destruction by storm seem all the more relevant in 2010 (as compiled from the bands website).

The PARSNIP REVOLT - Revolting Against The Mundane!

If asked for the key ingredients in a fine, whipped, parsnip puree, the members of The Parsnip Revolt might advise just adding a little bit of everything & adjusting to taste. They've followed that recipe with their music since 2005, revolting against the mundane sounds of modern music and crafting a truly original sound filled with emotion and melodic purity...fusing the tasty bits and pieces from their diverse palettes with a heaping scoop of catchy melodies. Ask the press to describe this savory concoction, and they'll tell you "earnest, wistful and undeniably radio-friendly, The Parsnip Revolt offer soulful feel-good rock melodies with widespread appeal (Philly Style Magazine)." (as compiled from the bands website).

Since 2005, the band has revolted against the mundane sounds of modern music and have crafted their own sound filled with emotion and melodic purity......(read more about this amazing band at http://www.theparsniprevolt.com/)

A little bit about Majors Junction:
Rich textures created by the band have been described as “Plush Lonesome Western Blues”. Attracting a listener base whose musical taste transcends different genres, Majors Junction produces a diverse meld of country honky-tonk blues with folk undertones and hints of bluegrass pickin' and good old rock & roll. It is a unique sound that celebrates individuality and hard work, two qualities the band shares with its hometown of Chicago.

The husband and wife duo of Mike Mulcahy and Heather O'Brien along with Heather’s sister Kiley O’Brien provide the upfront harmonies that give the band a rich sound. Mulcahy plays guitar and writes the majority of songs for the band having song topics ranging from religious intolerance to a future ruled by robots. Other members of the band include Ira Sussman on upright bass, Colin Williams on the drums and Matt Gandurski on the Telecaster. Colin also co-produces all of the albums with Mulcahy and has been with the band since its conception back in 2002.

Majors Junction can be regularly seen and heard at Chicago clubs like Martyrs’, The House of Blues and The Hideout, and also perform at festivals like the Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival, Metronome Festival, Taste of Chicago and the Greeley Stampede in Colorado (all as compiled from the bands website).

ROTOR ~ Neo-Hippies at Work

A flowered german tank full of iranian neohippies on mescaline in their search of the holy hole races through your auditory canal...

Be prepared for an astonishing piece of music! (stonerrock.com) This trio from Berlin makes an infernal intensive noise between old Kyuss, older eccentric US-indie-rock and very, very old psychedelic rumble. (rockhard) Attention! Neo-Hippies are at work. (metal hammer) Starless era King Crimson meets Monster Magnet, this is a ferocious slice of distorted riffing and turbo charged wah-pedal action, which stampedes through you like a herd of buffalo chasing the sun. A space-rock masterpiece for the grunge generation.

FABROCKATORS - Plain Old Ass-Kicking Rock

Big catchy hooks and hard driving riffs, with a touch of cl***ic rock only begins to describe this new release from the Southern Maryland based rock outfit The Fabrockators. A totally unique combination of hard rock, cl***ic rock, and just plain old ***-kicking rock is on display in “Party You Give”, the band’s debut release.

The band and their album, first released in August of this year, is now entering into a whole new phase of promotion with the engagement of Philadelphia based marketing and consulting firm Allure Media Entertainment. “We have big plans for this record”, stated marketing consultant Ken Cavalier, and it’s only just the beginning. The boys are at it again grinding out new music for their follow up album due to hit the street in early 2011”.

The band consisting of long-time area rock drummer John Wilding, and kick butt guitarist and lead vocalist Craig Pavone are hard working musicians on a mission, a mission to bring back the cl***ic sound of rock and combine it with modern day hard rock.

The band, hard at work in the studio, already working on their next record, plans to release 2 digital singles within the next month. Their debut record “Party You Give” is available online at the band’s website www.fabrockators.com as well as on iTunes and CD Baby. The new work will also be available for digital download at the website (as compiled from the bands website).
