Menhirs of Er Grah - Different World

British musician Thomas Carter doesn't stay in one genre for very long. His project March Rosetta has two albums out on the Clinical Archive netlabel which are quite different from each other. One is a pleasant and mildly avant-garde instrumental effort of electronic music while the other is a more mainstream pop outing.

Again, Mr. Carter shift gears with his new musical project Menhirs of Er Grah. Named after a Megalithic structure in France the music is as sparse and lonely as the stone. Different World can best be described as folk music. It is simply Carter's voice and guitar with another second guitar dubbed in later. The sound is, to put it simply, quite beautiful. Carter's voice has a not unpleasant wavering quality that communicates vulnerability. The guitar work provides a steady base for the lyrics which are complex yet intimate. I especially like the title track and "Red Roses". This is slow and meandering music, easy to relax to but full of meaning.

Giraffe...

GIRAFFE is US American singer/ songwriter James Gardner. With his latest album, James seems to have found his sound. "There is no Devil" is less enigmatic than 2008's self titled long player whose off-colours are replaced by rather warm and earthy tones here. Obviously it's a Blues/ Alt. Country/ Folk thing we get to hear but James distinctive voice and his just slightly awkward melodies bring forth the unique and rich GIRAFFE style. The album is produced with exactly the right amount of fuzz, never too shiny, always unmistakable. "There is no Devil" is nothing else but a masterpiece. Enjoy! (as compiled from Giraffe‘s website).

The history of Asteroid is a psychedelic space saga, timeless and endless, with no upside or downside, but with a beautiful ending. The band, formed during the winter of 2003, has undertaken a long musical journey and developed a sound well fit to the trio constellation. After being formed as a regular stoner band, it didn’t take long before new grounds were conquered. Since then, influences have been collected from blues and British 70’s classic rock, but also from Swedish traditional folk music.

Asteroid is now back with their second album, called simply “II”. It is a more evolved but also relaxed and groovy follow up to their highly acclaimed debut album S/T. This time they locked themselves up in a studio deep in the forest, trying to capture the raw and naked sound and feeling in their music. You will hear a tighter, heavier, but also darker Asteroid. You will still recognize the characteristic energy in the sound and feel the joy delivered by the musicians.

This record is like transporting yourself back to the psychedelic woods of Sweden, but unlike other 70’s influences bands this is also fresh and unique on its own. Asteroid is today a well-known live act all over Europe with constant touring and a reputation of wild and sweaty live shows (as stated in the bands website) . The Saturday Giant

It's been a busy year for The Saturday Giant, aka Columbus, Ohio resident Philip Cogley.   He wrote, recorded and mixed his debut, You've Heard of Dragons; polished up solo arrangements of the songs; played a bunch of shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, and a litany of stops in between; released a benefit double single called Freedom of Choice; performed at a TEDx conference in Columbus and this year's SXSW Festival in Austin; and began writing and recording a follow-up EP.
Though he embraces a do-it-yourself ethos, Cogley's solo performances are surprisingly complete: he performs as a one-man band, employing looping technology to build lush arrangements comprised of beatboxing, guitar soundscapes, keyboards and vocals. Though this approach tends to captivate audiences, it's Cogley's instinct towards restraint that makes a Saturday Giant show truly memorable--songs are constructed and disassembled with economy, without resort to virtuosic displays that lead many looping artists into more tedious territory (as compiled on the bands website)

The Seed

The Seed is a group of talented twenty-somethings currently hailing from southwest Virginia (U.S.A.). Newly formed as of the Fall of 2005, The Seed began as a reggae/rock-infused trio. Since then, the group has set out to create a tactful array of soulfully crafted, melodically smooth gems that would not only incite listener appeal but would also provoke deeper thought on issues of societal development, personal growth and the direction of the youth of today.

It is the band's intent to make music that makes you feel good or just feel, period. Reggae and R&B, Funk and Rock - multiple styles of music have brought inspiration to the band throughout the years. Such influences can be heard in the stylings of The Seed's repertoire as their rhythms touch upon many different genres.

Discorder Magazine Review of Porch Lights EP March 2010 Vancouver folk-country artists Earlstown Winter released their five-track EP, which plays much in the same vein of local group Eldorado with their brand of sweet-loving country music. The opening track, “Porch Lights”, is a slow burning moody ballad about lost love. It has a gentle, rolling, organic feel that is a perfect introduction to the band. Porch Lights is a very laidback affair. Each song is stripped back in terms of sound, but they don’t suffer for it. Singer-songwriter Jonathan Truefitt makes it all worth listening to. Truefitt has such a unique voice that one must hear to believe, as nothing is really comparable to it. Even with a single listen, anyone would be convinced that this guy’s broken heart is authentic. The final track “Helena” is quite beautiful and is guaranteed to get a tear rolling down the cheek of those listeners with a freshly broken heart. Not something that regularly comes out of the Vancouver scene, Earlstown Winter has an unpretentious, soft and thoroughly gentle sound. There is nothing abrasive or earth shattering here—just some very pretty music.

GOE completed recording their self-produced debut EP "Ignorance & Lies" at Big Blue Meenie Studios (Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, Helmet, Local H, Bouncing Souls, The Misfits, etc.) All songs were written, arranged and produced by the band. Formed in late 2001, Solstice Coil is one of Israel's most veteran progressive rock groups. The band's upcoming third album, a follow-up to Natural Causes (2011), released globally via Melodic Revolution Records, will feature 10 new tracks written, arranged and produced by the band.

Victoria Moon is born! Up next is the release of a wonderful film called The Stream featuring original soundtrack music by Curvey. A moving adventure where you need the force of friendship to prevail.

The Young Dubliners are excited for the release of Saints and Sinners, their second album on 429 Records--and first batch of original material since 2005's critically acclaimed Real World. After taking an exciting retro, rootsy labor of love detour to give a shout out to the masters of Irish song past and present on their 2007 429 Records debut "With All Due Respect, The Irish Sessions", the Young Dubliners drew inspiration from the trials and tribulations of the past few years on the road where they have encountered their share of, to borrow from an Irish proverb, "poets and patriots, saints and sinners", for the new album. The Phantom Creeps..

The Phantom Creeps are just three guys hell-bent on wreaking havoc on the Psychobilly/Rockabilly world.  Blending Rockabilly, Punk, Country, Psychobilly and good ole' fashioned Rock into their own brand of Hellbilly Rock and Roll, they have established themselves as a band to be reckoned with! Only a year and a half into existence the Creeps have been very busy - finishing off their debut album in the summer of 2009, playing non-stop and promoting themselves tirelessly. The Creeps have garnered much attention in the Psychobilly & Punk scene by sharing the stage with such heavyweights as The Guana Batz, The Creepshow, The Brains, Big John Bates, The Deadcats, The Raygun Cowboys and numerous other bands. Indie radio play is coming fast and furious with stations from Canada, U.S., The U.K. and Australia all getting on board. MARBLE SHEEP were founded in 1987 by Ken Matsutani(ex WHITE HEAVEN). First the band started its musical activity under the name of "MARBLE SHEEP & THE RUN-DOWN SUN'S CHILDREN." The good old MARBLE SHEEP passed through many styles of psychedila like Minimal Music, Heavy Rock and S.F. Jam Psych as both band and music continued to evolve.

The name MARBLE SHEEP is highly esteemed overseas as a fixture of the Japanese rock scene since early times.  MARBLE SHEEP started their real overseas activity from 2002. They obtained overseas record company deals too and had many live shows in USA and Europe. In contrast with the long history of the band, MARBLE SHEEP are described as "Merry Pranksters of the 21st Century." This can be attributed to the merry and energetic live performances which can flip out even full-grown-ups while taking listeners to the Space World easily.

Dexter Jones' Circus Orchestra ..

Dexter Jones’ Circus Orchestra music withholds hints of Swedish progressive rock combined with powerful guitar melodies and catchy drums. It stretches itself between hard driven riffs and accoustic ballads. The band has been compared to everything from Mammoth Volume and Bob Dylan to Blue Oyster Cult and Thin Lizzy. Comparisons aside: -This is probably how the 70`s would sound today. Its a true gem with endless potential!

Dexter Jones’ Circus Orchestra formed in 2000 in Umeå, Sweden by Tia Marklund, David and Daniel Israelsson, Håkan Dalsfelt and Kent Jonsson. The debut record “The Losers are Back in Town” was recorded in 2003 and released by Freebird Records as a 7” vinyl.

Work on a full length album started shortly after and the self titled debut (on Freebird Records) was released in 2004, containing 10 dynamite songs. Slowly things started to happen. DJCO was booked at Eurosonic Festival January 2005 and toured mainland Europe twice, together with the cult band Hypnos 69. The debut LP got great reviews and was even hailed ”the album of the year” by some of the leading European rock magazines. The songs could also be found on a few compilation records such as “The Ultimate fuzzcollection” (Fuzzorama Records).

Burning Saviours..

Burning Saviours is now a dark, heavy doomband with a 70´s sound to it. Burning Saviours will focus on getting back to the sound of the two first albums and basically make pure doom songs without "hippie-influences".  It is official. Paul E. Phonics is a musical alter ego of Canadian Paul McCormick, a side of the musician that evolved from his fondness for New Wave, Electronica, Progressive Rock, Industrial Rock and Film Scores.  The combination of these influences has led to a sound that is utterly unique with each song becoming the equivalent of a short film in its own right with abstract, poetic lyrics revealing the plot like some kind of secret code.
McCormick left his homeland in 2000 in search of new musical inspiration ending up in Berlin, Germany.  After years of playing in various bands and performing alone with his acoustic guitar in the smaller cafés and clubs of the city, he decided in 2009 to take a different approach and awaken some aspects of his musical personality that had been dormant for years.  The result is "Paul E. Phonics" - a singer/songwriter for the 21st century - essentially a one man band with Paul on keyboards and vocals accompanied by his laptop.

KUNG FURY is a three piece rock-n-roll band that’s heavy with Big hooks, tight pants, fast kicks and short songs, in the vein of: Iggy and the Stooges, N.Y. Dolls, QOTSA, Teengenerate, Janes Addiction...

Shaun Brennan (guitar/vocals), founder of the shining Washington, D.C. based glam rock band Vanity Champ and R.E.A. (drums), formerly of notorious Albany punkers The Disenchanted, met in New York City in 2003 and began writing songs.  Soon joined by Neal Ostberg on bass (of the infamous NYC Hardcore band Antidote) they started recording and playing gigs along the East Coast while staying steady on the NYC club circuit.  In 2008 Jonny Z took over on bass duties and the boys hit the studio in May of 2009 to record the newly released and smashing EP “KICKS!”, featuring three fresh songs: “Take A Punch”, “I’m A Man” and “Wired”.

Buddha Sentenza on the commercial free Pluto Radio stream ..

After a seemingly random sonic collision over the city of Heidelberg in late 2008, the constellation of *Buddha Sentenza* began to form during the darkest hours of that cold and silent winter. Deep under the earth, in the hidden bowels of the Klonlabor tunnel complex, the searing strings and pounding drums condensed rapidly to form a nebulous cloud of loosely jammed, spaced-out, rocking riffs.
Rotating freely around some of the most ancient soundscapes – from the astral end of the Pink Floyd to the depths of galaxies such as Black Sabbath – Buddha Sentenza has continued to expand, drawing energy from contemporary constellations as well. Thus, its elements follow the trail of early rock psychonauts and modern riffrockers alike, fusing droning riffs, screaming solos and cosmic harmonies into an instrumental sound experience that defies any strict genre boundaries. The Story of ….The Beat Dolls.
From the ashes of Dallas Punk/Ska band, SkateArounChippy, The Beat Dolls. were born. A Rock n’ Roll band, heavily influenced by Punk Rock, and the slightest hint of Ska, that’s taking Austin and the rest of the world by storm. The Beat Dolls. will assault you with frantic distortion, pleasantly brain staining melodies and lyrics, vocals that conjure up images of a Gwen Stefani/Brody Dalle hybrid, reinforced by the backbone, an unyielding rhythm section that packs a punch that will leave you reeling, well into your drive home. The band name was actually borrowed from a song titled Beat Doll that Angie’s dad, Jack Starr, on Norton Records wrote. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Starr made his mark on the world with fans of Rockabilly and horror movies alike, including Jack White and The Upholsterers who covered Starr’s “Pain (Gimme Sympathy).
The Beat Dolls. began much the same way SkateAroundChippy did, with Ramon writing music and Angie, writing lyrics. Eventually Ramon moved onto his own band, with Ernesto Calderon, drummer for SkateAroundChippy, to form The Scary Mondelos. This left Angie in need of a writer and guitar player, not to mention a bass player, also Ramon’s role, and a drummer. Angie looked no further than in the mirror and her Austin community of musicians. She found a guitar player in herself, a rude thumping bass player in Barry Anderson and a thunder composing drummer in Mike Reisch.
The Beat Dolls. belt out tales of sarcasm, wit, humor, sadness and madness, of which at least one of those every one of us could relate. If you are looking for Britney, Katy or Lady, you are looking in the wrong direction, for The Beat Dolls. sugar coat nothing and you’ll get no apologies here.
But…one may find…that you are not alone and that Angie has articulated what’s been festering in your crazy brain all along.

Our heroes met at University, where they were bitter rivals. Years later, they found themselves in New York City, beavering away in dusty corners of the Great Media Behemoth: J put in time at a literary agency and studied the mystical art of making records while slaving as a sound engineer at various hip recording studios about town, while A avoided sunlight as a film archivist and curator at a broadcasting museum. Both had unsatisfying tenures in doomed rock combos where they nevertheless honed their musical skills. Each fancied himself a songwriter in the classic pop mode and pursued the elusive art with uncommon zeal, resting only for massive infusions of film noir and comic books. The Orlando based Mumpsy create a pop incarnation of eclectic influences ranging from punk bands to ‘50’s crooners and beyond. Releasing six albums and a handful of b-sides since 2005, Mumpsy started as a musical project fronted by singer-songwriter Jeff Ilgenfritz and quickly caught on like a wildfire in the surrounding Central Florida area. Biography

While working at a music store in Malmö, Sweden, Eduardo Fernandez Rodriguez had word that a drummer was moving to town and gave him his contacts. Christian Lundberg was at the point moving to Malmö for work but met up with Eduardo. Together with Pär Hallgren on the bass, The band Sgt. Sunshine was formed in 1998 in Malmö, Sweden.

Is a Sweden-based power trio which delivers a well-known mix of ´70s heavy rock, acid influenced improvisational jams and psychedelic atmosphere. Their debut album: Sgt. Sunshine S/T gain excellent reviews on several rock magazines all around the world coming up as one of the best band of the year 2003 on the STONER ROCK magazine. Their particularly sound by self-made fuzz pedals in a mixture with the great song melodies and esoteric lyrics makes SGT SUNSHINE a great listening experience. The unabashed delivery of groovy power, the junky sound, the Latin-like drums sensibility and the dirty guitar fuzz make this band irresistible.
