Zombies of the Stratosphere

ZOTS live at IPO NYC 2010 zombies of the stratosphere

Portion of band's web info):(  "Our heroes met at University, where they were bitter rivals. Years later, they found themselves in New York City, beavering away in dusty corners of the Great Media Behemoth: J put in time at a literary agency and studied the mystical art of making records while slaving as a sound engineer at various hip recording studios about town, while A avoided sunlight as a film archivist and curator at a broadcasting museum. Both had unsatisfying tenures in doomed rock combos where they nevertheless honed their musical skills. Each fancied himself a songwriter in the classic pop mode and pursued the elusive art with uncommon zeal, resting only for massive infusions of film noir and comic books,"  - Zombies of the Stratosphere   http://www.myspace.com/zombiesofthestratosphere

ZZG on the commercial free Pluto Radio stream

ZZG"Yet another band I completely enjoy... ZZG!"  - Lee Crisman

"...the originality of the music, and ZZG's attempt to reflect and re-imagine early rock, is what really shines here. Far from the mainstream, and certainly no where near current modern rock trends, ZZG's Trapped in the Mirror is an interesting, innovative and entertaining platter of retro progressive rock. Recommended. 4.0/5.0 Review: Craig Hartranft, 07.26.2010 ZZG were formed in 2007 when Guitarist Daniel Roberts and Bassist Keith Matthews formed a band that reflected the heyday of late 60's and early 70's hard rock. "We wanted to write guitar and bass hooks that people would still have stuck in their heads hours and hours after hearing the music. The riffs of Deep Purple were our benchmark". After a few false starts and lots of writing drummer Craig Birnie joined the band. Dan took on the role of singer/guitarist but an element was still missing. Finally Stu Mitchell joined the band bringing modern tones. Stu balanced the old world rock feel with his own unique guitar sound. The ZZG band sound was complete. After refining the first collection of songs the band went offline to record with "Trapped in The Mirror" completed early 2010. In May 2010, ZZG joined UK publicist Nicky Baldrian from Two Side Moon Promotions to promote "Trapped in the Mirror" in the UK and Western Europe. The band is now playing live regularly and is writing again. The first new songs Red Dawn" and "California rolling" are complete with more being arranged right now. A second album is planned for early 2011. (per band's webpage)

There's a place not too far from home,
I found it when I did roam.
If its not too full, you can get in.
They tell me closed its never been.

All the drinks are always free
and girls are hot, you will see.
You can do most anything
if he allows the scripts you bring.

Hoagy King
where the music is always cool
Hoagy King
we can do a party pool
Hoagy King
all the girls have big boobs
Hoagy King

all the dudes are fucking crazy
you can see a zebra dancing lazy
you can smoke and none call attention
you must to know you're in a new dimension

Heavy Metal always sounds
and lots of bands from underground

Bio

When Australian band Dingo Landlord moved from Cape Cockburn (NT, Australia, near Croker Island) to Amsterdam (Holland) in search for fame, fortune, drugs, booze and loose women, they instantly found a couple of these aspirations to have come true upon arrival. (Read loose women, booze and drugs a plenty.) Ironically, just after two weeks in Holland they met Holistic healer Raoulfo Arnolfolonzo who convinced them to end their grievous ways by making them renounce drugs and alcohol altogether. This, sadly, made the lose interest in women as well. Clean and sober and with too much time on their hands they met up with Brit guitarist Raedolph Huffington and formed the band Whipping Pole (now with Nigel St. Davids only on vocal duties instead of 6 strings as well). Their first album "Eat The Meat" was not received well by just about anybody and they were swiftly dropped by their management and the record subsequently was never released. Quickly they formed a new band EcP79 (same line up, different name) and went to work on their soon to be finished next album and current masterpiece “When The Win Was One”. Hopefully this will lead to some proper management representation in the future and who knows, maybe even the fulfillment of their remaining aspirations.  (per the band's website).

"I find this band's music exceedingly interesting to listen to."  - Lee

Drop Electric on the commercial free Pluto Radio stream

“Beautiful video, very beautiful timelapse stuff and so I stayed… and they knocked me out. I’d seen Sigur Ros earlier in the week, we’d webcast that show, Sigur Ros is on my mind. Epic sounding instrumental band, with beautiful, beautiful vocals and here was Drop Electric, doing something sorta similar. “

- Bob Boilen, All Songs Considered (NPR)

“Drop Electric, at its finest, can make the sounds coming from your speakers feel vast and uncontainable. And by listening to it, for a short while you too can feel vast and uncontainable. So if that’s the effect of the recorded product, imagine the live Drop Electric experience. Can you really have a true sense of Drop Electric until your eyes, as well as your ears, have experienced them?”

The Flying Eyes

"This is a freakin' amazing band..."  - Lee

Shortly before the end of 2009, I got this brilliant album from the guys at Trip In Time Records. Well, actually, this album is a compilation consisting of their two EP's 'Bad Blood' and 'Winter', but I can well imagine that most of the Cosmic Lava readers as well as for myself, haven't heard one of this releases before. Therefore, it has been an excellent idea from Trip In Time/World In Sound to make them accessible to the general public. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, THE FLYING EYES' heavy psychedelic rock is deeply ingrained in the late 1960's. Of course, one is immediately reminded of The Doors, Damnation of Adam Blessing, Steppenwolf or The 13th Floor Elevators, but nevertheless THE FLYING EYES have managed to keep their own identity. One of the reasons for this is the band's striking talent to write exciting and profound songs. An added strength is the dark and vigorous voice of Will Kelly. His timbre is comparable to Jim Morrison during the 'Morrison Hotel'/'L.A. Woman' period, but he doesn't sound like any rip off. Will Kelly's voice is significantly more complex, which leads to the fact that he isn't always close to Morrison's style. Furthermore, it should not go unnoticed that the remaining three guys are doing a flawless job, too.
The album's opener 'Lay With Me' proves impressively that THE FLYING EYES are able to captivate the listener. They create an atmospheric, melancholic ambience that slowly creeps under your skin. The good old blues is always present, but the band is open minded for further influences. 'Bad Blood' starts with a funky guitar riff before it turns into a heavy psychedelic monster, while 'Don't Point Your God At Me' is a good combination of hardrock, blues and acid rock. Once again, Will Kelly shows that he's a gifted singer. Damn, I love his voice. 'She Comes To Me' is much quieter and surprises with an additional organ and cello. Another great song is 'Red Sheets' with some killer guitar playing by Adam Bufano. It's way cool including some powerful hooks. Finally, I would like to say a few words about 'Around The Bend', which for me is one of the most intense songs on this album. It's saturated with deep emotions and perfectly embodies the mood of a lonely winter evening. All in all, this is a round, often melancholically swinging album with compositions made up of artistic beauty. A must-buy for fans of heavy, acid-tinged blues rock cooked with melodic, psychedelic pop.

Lost Harbours on the commercial free Pluto Radio stream

LOST HARBOURS - EAST OF THE WALL CAAD3 | 2010 | Download Now
Tracklisting:
01 26 Degrees 02 Pathway Through Sky 03 Naked Earth

Lost Harbours was conceived from the bedroom recordings of Richard Thompson; influenced by an eclectic array of music including Nick Drake, Espers, Richard Youngs, Tara Jane O'Neil, Philip Glass and Nico, plus the writings of William Blake and Jorge Luis Borges. In 2009 Emma Reed (Ten Tigers) joined on Flute and Clarinet, where upon a series of gigs were undertaken over the winter and spring months of 2009/2010.

This first release is one of several for 2010; a hand crafted CDR package lovingly put together over a series of hot bucolic days. The recordings are a mixture of recent and old material which has never been played live; three tracks totalling nearly 20 minutes.
We will be releasing plenty more records in the near future, so watch this space.

The Hillmisters on the commercial free Pluto Radio stream

THE HILLMISTERS / (((OH DEAR 12" SPLIT CAAD2 | 2010 | Download Now
matt and bryan

The Hillmisters formed as an emerging friendship, fellow spirits looking to make shimmering alternative pop sounds like those which excited them so. A joyous sound of noisy, melodic, messy guitar pop with healthy doses of feedback and experimentation. It is bands like The Velvet Underground, The Kinks, The 13th Floor Elevators that are all staple diets for these guys, but influences are certainly far ranging. Arising from Southend in Essex the magic is between the eyes, the sun and moon.

(((Oh Dear are Marcus, Liz, Jack and Ben. Residing in the picturesque riverside enclave of Woodbridge, Suffolk, quietly corrupting the youth of East Anglia with their lo-fi stylings. Some say sounding like Harmacy-era Sebadoh with tinges of lost indie pop gods. Recently seen supporting indie titans British Sea Power, alt-folksters Arbouretum and playing a live set on Radio Suffolk from the the Anchor pub in Woodbridge. Between them they have one cat, three caravans and a great song about a Dutch classic rock radio station that sadly ceased broadcasting last year.

"'Hang it High' features two of my favorite things in metal music: chunky guitar and pinched harmonics. I found myself singing along to each song after only hearing the chorus a few times. You can’t help but bob your head and tap your foot to the beat."  — Sue Hardee, RaleighMusic.com

"'The Chosen Few' is full of great hooks that stick in your head - it’s infectious, it’s viral, and if any song had a chance of being number 1 on a chart, it’s Modena’s 'The Chosen Few'!"  — GulfCoastMusic.com review

"Modena is definitely a band with a future! I see no reason why they should not become rocks next superstars within the next year! I anxiously await the release of Modena’s full album next year and hope I have the opportunity to review that one as well. I rate SECOND TIME AROUND EP by Modena, 10 stars and a gigantic “thumbs up”!!"  — GulfCoastMusic.com

Hope you are having a good Fall and neither storms nor elections are getting you down! No matter what your mood, I would like to invite you to what will surely be a fun time at Skylark in West Seattle this Sunday, 11/11 starting at 8pm. It's a free Songwriters in Seattle showcase that will start out mellow and end with a bang courtesy of me and my band going full out! My fantastic new guitarist Art Bromage will be doing his first show with us, and we'll be knocking out most of the songs from my This Journey album with a sprinkling from the back catalog.

As we're doing this show for free in support of the non-profit org Songwriters in Seattle, I would ask that in kind you consider making a contribution to the big fundraiser that is running for their big event next year: A 3-day "for the music community, by the music community" convention, expo, and performance event called Northwest Music Experience. Visit the IndieGoGo Page here: http://www.indiegogo.com/nwme - it is a cause near and dear to my heart as you will see from the video, so thank you!

Hope to see you at the show Sunday - Cheers!

Chris
